letter from Kerala CM to TN Chief Minister

Kerala CM Oommen Chandy’s letter to Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa on Mullaperiyar daw row

18.12.11

There are highly disturbing news about several instances of attacks on Keralites in Tamil Nadu on the eve of the current debate on the Mullaperiyar issue. An unfortunate instance of Advocates manhandling Malayalees has been reported in leading national dailies. Other instances of vandalism and attacks have also been reported.

In Kerala we have taken every possible step to ensure that no person from Tamil Nadu is attacked. Police presence at Kumily and other sensitive areas have been strengthened. However, there is a widespread misinformation campaign which needs to be addressed immediately. False reports are making their rounds. A report about Tamil labourers fleeing Kerala and a camp being opened for them in Theni is one such case of misinformation. Tamil labourers work in Kerala in large numbers, particularly in the plantation sector and their contribution to Kerala’s economy is valuable. Other stories like women labourers being molested are also being falsely circulated to inflame passion among the people of Tamil Nadu. Labourers and women from Tamil Nadu are safe in Kerala and we shall ensure their protection.

This is the season of Sabarimala pilgrimmage. Large number of Ayyappa devotees from Tamil Nadu have been visiting Sabarimala and there have been no untoward instances. On the other hand, pilgrims are happy about the conduct of our people and the police who have been extending all possible help.

There are large number of students from Kerala studying in various institutions in Tamil Nadu. Lakhs of people are employed in organized and unorganized sector. Their families in Kerala are in a state of anxiety. I request you to take immediate action to control the situation, ensure safety of our people and take stringent action against those elements who are involved in such illegal acts. Besides, I request you to make an appeal to the public not to indulge in such acts of violence and vandalism aimed at their brethren from Kerala.

You will share with me the concern and consequences of such misleading campaigns. The sense of insecurity that false information could spread needs to be cubed urgently. Certain sections of the media in Tamil Nadu are whipping up passions by repeatedly projecting totally irrelevant and misleading images. I request you to kindly intervene and take possible corrective action to prevent the propagation of such calculated misinformation.

It is unfortunate that the Mullaperiyar issue should spill over into events affecting peace and harmony among our people. We have always valued the excellent cooperation and goodwill between our two States. Government of Kerala has already taken all possible steps to ensure that Tamil residents in Kerala and visitors from Tamil Nadu are safe in the State. All political parties in the State have appealed for restraint.

This is a situation where we have to urgently provide a sense of protection and confidence to our people. I am sure you will act immediately and firmly to contain the situation. I am willing to issue a joint statement with you and appeal urging peace and restraint and promising all protection. I look forward to your response and positive action.

Yours sincerely

Oommen Chandy

Selvi J. Jayalalithaa

Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu
